FINE ANTIQUE CHINESE EXPORT PAINTING OF THE DOWAGER EMPRESS CIXI
Exquisitely hand-painted, the Empress shown as a young woman, seated on a throne in elaborate Court dress consisting of a full-length yellow Dragon robe sewn with roundels enclosing dragons, a wave motif at the bottom of the robe as would befit the Empress, a large string of Eastern pearls around her neck, wearing a Winter hat faced with sable, and a ling zhi (plume) of shuang yan hua ling (Double-eyed Peacock feathers). She is shown with her Lady-in-Waiting holding a large Ruyi (sceptre) in hand. In the background stands a large three-panel elaborate wood floor screen, decorated with a large Ho-O bird surrounded by other similar birds. The floor is painted with highly detailed patterned floral diagonal tiles , and a large circular medallion of cloud scrolls encircling a brilliant Ho-o bird sits below the throne. Condition: Some separation of paper on the right side and in the center into the screen and to the left of the screen and some minor foxing; else very good; in an old frame by The Rowley Gallery Ltd, Kensington.
